Renowned surgical oncologist, Mitchell C. Posner, MD, FACS, has been appointed to serve as physician-in-chief of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center.
In this newly created position, Dr. Posner will work with clinical department chairs and faculty as well as UChicago Medicine senior leadership to implement strategies designed to further enhance clinical programs and research efforts in the Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition to this new appointment, Dr. Posner will continue his work as chief of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology.
Dr. Posner is known internationally for his knowledge and skill in the management of upper gastrointestinal cancers, including esophageal and pancreatic cancer. His clinical expertise and commitment to interdisciplinary cancer care has garnered many accolades, including honors as a Top Doctor according to Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.
As a researcher, Dr. Posner concentrates on the molecular basis of malignancies, which has enabled him to design and guide groundbreaking clinical trials for cancers of the pancreas, esophagus, colon, stomach, rectum, and liver. With more than 30 years of experience, he has won dozens of awards and published 200 articles, abstracts, and book chapters.
Dr. Posner completed his medical education at State University of New York in Buffalo. He then underwent his surgical residency at the University of Colorado as well as a surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
